Tips to Staying Healthy While Traveling

While you can easily pack some snacks to bring along with you while you are driving or flying, there is the inevitable fact that at some point during your travels you will need to eat out at a restaurant. This usually cannot be avoided in most circumstances. There is no need to stress out about this. The important thing is to make the best and most healthy decisions you can with what is available to you.

    Breakfast

As you probably already know, most breakfast offerings are filled with high carb options such as waffles, pancakes, bagels, cereal and French toast. These should be avoided whenever possible. By starting your day off with an overload of carbohydrates, you run the very real risk of causing your blood sugar to rise rapidly and then crash later. This can leave you feeling irritable, fatigued and depressed. It may also make it difficult for you to think clearly, which can definitely be a problem if you are traveling on business. In addition, this is certainly no way to start what should be a pleasurable day if you are on vacation. Instead, make a conscious effort to make healthy eating decisions from breakfast such as whole grains if you must have bread, eggs and fresh fruit.

    Lunch

In most cases, regardless of where you are staying, you can usually order a big salad that will make an ideal and healthy lunch selection. Salads provide an excellent way to load up on big, leafy green vegetables as well as many other veggies. You may also choose grilled meat to include in your salad. Instead of heavy and fattening cream dressings, opt instead for oil and vinegar if you feel you need a dressing.

If you are looking for something more substantial, be sure to peruse the dinner menu as this will likely provide you with more options that are certainly more healthy than the standard lunch fare. Grilled meat such as chicken, fish and shrimp are typically available at most restaurants.

    Dinner

An excellent choice for dinner in most restaurants would be a lean cut of meat along with steamed vegetables. You might also choose to have a green salad on the side. If you are in the mood for potatoes, be sure to opt for a baked potato instead of the standard French fries. The best choices are usually those that are either roasted, steamed or broiled. Avoid those options that are sautéed, fried or creamed. Those options will usually have the highest calorie and fat contents.

Remember that there is no reason that you cannot choose something from the menu and then ask to have it prepared in a way that is not offered on the menu. If you ask in a polite manner, most restaurants are more than happy to accommodate such requests.

In addition, it is important to be conscious of the importance of asking for sauces and salad dressings to be presented on the side of whatever dish you order. You may likely find that there are numerous options which can be perfectly healthy if you simply remove these items or ask them to be presented on the side.

During those times when you simply have no choice but to eat at a fast food restaurant, be selective about your options. More and more fast food restaurants are becoming health conscious and offering selections which are decidedly healthier than standard burgers and fries. Many now offer salads and fresh fruits. If you are a vegetarian, you can also usually find at least one option on the menu that is vegetarian friendly. If you are in doubt, ask for a nutritional information sheet.
